PointNet++: Deep Hierarchical Feature Learning on Point Sets in a Metric Space
Few prior works study deep learning on point sets. PointNet is a pioneer in this direction. However, by design PointNet does not capture local structures induced by the metric space points live in, limiting its ability to recognize fine-grained patterns and generalizability to complex scenes. In this work, we introduce a hierarchical neural network that applies PointNet recursively on a nested partitioning of the input point set. By exploiting metric space distances, our network is able to learn local features with increasing contextual scales. With further observation that point sets are usually sampled with varying densities, which results in greatly decreased performance for networks trained on uniform densities, we propose novel set learning layers to adaptively combine features from multiple scales. Experiments show that our network called PointNet++ is able to learn deep point set features efficiently and robustly. In particular, results significantly better than state-of-the-art have been obtained on challenging benchmarks of 3D point clouds.
Instance Segmentation for Point Sets

Recently proposed neural network architectures like PointNet [QSMG16] and PointNet++ [QYSG17] have made it possible to apply Deep Learning to 3D point sets. The feature representations of shapes learned by these two networks enabled training classifiers for Semantic Segmentation, and more recently for Instance Segmentation via the Similarity Group Proposal Network (SGPN) [WYHN17]. One area of improvement which has been highlighted by SGPN's authors, pertains to use of memory intensive similarity matrices which occupy memory quadratic in the number of points. In this report, we attempt to tackle this issue through use of two sampling based methods, which compute Instance Segmentation on a sub-sampled Point Set, and then extrapolate labels to the complete set using the nearest neigbhour approach. While both approaches perform equally well on large sub-samples, the random-based strategy gives the most improvements in terms of speed and memory usage.

As clearly indicated in the title, this paper submission is an extension of the PointNet work of [19], to appear at CVPR 2017. The goal is to classify and segment (3D) point clouds. Novel contributions over [19] are the use of a hierarchical network, leveraging neighbourhoods at different scales, and a mechanism to deal with varying sampling densities, effectively generating receptive fields that vary in a data dependent manner. All this leads to state-of-the-art results. PointNet seems an important extension over PointNet, in that it allows to properly exploit local spatial information.
Nearest Neighbor Sampling of Point Sets using Rays

We propose a new framework for the sampling, compression, and analysis of distributions of point sets and other geometric objects embedded in Euclidean spaces. Our approach involves constructing a tensor called the RaySense sketch, which captures nearest neighbors from the underlying geometry of points along a set of rays. We explore various operations that can be performed on the RaySense sketch, leading to different properties and potential applications. Statistical information about the data set can be extracted from the sketch, independent of the ray set. Line integrals on point sets can be efficiently computed using the sketch. We also present several examples illustrating applications of the proposed strategy in practical scenarios.
